VTU 2025 scheme subject codes, decoded

Codes like 1BMATC101 and 1BESC104A are not random. Here is what each part of a first-year 2025 paper code tells you, read off the catalogue itself.

Under the 2025 scheme the first-year paper codes changed shape. 22MAU101D became 1BMATC101. If you are reading a timetable or a syllabus PDF and cannot tell which semester a paper belongs to, the code already tells you — once you know which part to read.

The shape of a 2025 first-year code

Every first-year paper in the 2025 catalogue follows the same pattern:

1B M A T C 1 0 1
│ │ │ │
│ │ │ └─ serial within the group
│ │ └─── 1 = semester 1, 2 = semester 2
│ └─────────── subject area letters
└──────────────── first year, 2025 scheme

The 1B prefix marks a first-year 2025 paper. The letters after it name the subject area — MAT for mathematics, ESC for engineering science, POP for the C programming lab, IDT for innovation and design thinking.

The digit that tells you the semester

This is the part worth memorising: the first digit of the three-digit number is the semester.

1BESC104A → semester 1
1BESC204A → semester 2, same subject

Across the whole 2025 first-year catalogue the pattern holds — every paper has a semester-1 code ending 1xx and a matching semester-2 code ending 2xx. Applied Mathematics I is 1BMATC101 in semester 1; the semester-2 continuation is 1BMATC201. A paper's two codes differ in that one digit and nowhere else.

So if you are holding a code and cannot remember which semester it belongs to, the answer is the first digit of the number. No need to look it up.

Streams share a code, or do not

Some papers are common to every branch, and some are split by stream. The letters at the end of the code separate them.

1BMATC101 Differential Calculus and Linear Algebra: CV Stream
1BMATE101 Differential Calculus and Linear Algebra: EEE Stream
1BMATM101 Differential Calculus and Linear Algebra: ME Stream
1BMATS101 Calculus and Linear Algebra: CSE Stream

Same subject family, four different papers, four different syllabus PDFs. Engineering Science papers work the same way: 1BESC104A is Building Sciences and Mechanics, 1BESC104E is Essentials of Information Technology. The trailing letter is the variant, and the variants are not interchangeable — a CSE student and a Civil student sit different mathematics papers under the same subject name.

Some Engineering Science papers are marked for all streams and exist as a single code, which is why the catalogue lists both kinds.

The category letters

Beyond the subject area, papers carry a category that decides how they are taught and assessed:

ASC Applied Science Course e.g. 1BMATC101
ESC Engineering Science Course e.g. 1BESC104A
PSC Programme Specific Course e.g. 1BEIT105
PSCL Programme Specific Lab e.g. 1BPOPL107
AEC Ability Enhancement Course e.g. 1BIDTL158
SDC Skill Development Course e.g. 1BPRJ258

The L before the number marks a lab — 1BPOPL107 is the C Programming Lab that pairs with 1BEIT105, Programming in C. A lab code and its theory code share the subject-area letters, so you can find the pair.

Why this helps in practice

Three situations where reading the code saves a lookup:

Working out which semester a paper on a notice board belongs to, without knowing the subject. Sorting a pile of syllabus PDFs by semester when the file names do not say. And checking whether two students are actually sitting the same paper — same subject name, different variant letter means different papers, and comparing marks between them means nothing.

Finding the syllabus behind a code

One VTU lists first-year 2025 papers with their codes, stream variants and the official syllabus PDF for each, so you can go from a code to the right document without hunting through college groups. Free on Android.
