VTU CGPA to percentage: the formula, and why it is not a straight multiply
VTU publishes one conversion and it is not CGPA × 10. Here is the formula, where the 0.75 comes from, and what it does to a placement cut-off.
Track Your Semester
Grades in, CGPA out — with the credits already filled in.
VTU publishes one grade scale for the 2018 CBCS scheme, and the calculator uses exactly that scale — not an approximation of it:
SGPA is the credit-weighted average of those points for one semester. CGPA is the same weighted average taken across every semester you have completed.
To turn a CGPA into a percentage, VTU's own conversion is:
Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
That is a published university rule, so the calculator applies it directly.
Going the other way — typing in a percentage and getting a CGPA back — is not a VTU rule. The university only publishes the direction above. The app will do the reverse sum for you, but it labels the answer an estimate, because that is what it is. If you need the number for an application form, use the forward formula on your CGPA rather than working backwards from a percentage.
Older CBCS schemes used different letters — S, A, B, C, D and E. There is no official mapping from those letters onto the 2018 scale, so the calculator refuses them rather than guessing at a conversion and handing you a number that looks authoritative. The grade table on screen says so.
If you are on a pre-2018 scheme you can still enter your SGPA figures directly and get a CGPA, since that part of the maths is not scheme-dependent.
You can type your grades in by hand, and many students will. But if you have fetched your results in the app, the calculator already knows them, and two details make a real difference:
The same CGPA figure is used everywhere in the app — the calculator and the results screen share one definition, so the two can never disagree with each other.
It will not fill in your credits for you. VTU's credit values vary by scheme, branch and semester, and the tables are not something we can verify from here. Inventing them would mean handing students a wrong CGPA that looks right, which is worse than asking you to type eight numbers. You enter the credits once from your scheme document and the calculator keeps them.
Because One VTU knows your subjects and their credits, you only enter grades. It handles SGPA per semester and rolls it into your CGPA automatically.
