Track Your Semester

Internal Marks

Your IA marks per subject, totalled as you enter them.

VTU counts your best two internals, not all three

Every subject has three internal assessments, and the final internal mark is the average of your best two. The weakest attempt is dropped — which means the third IA is not a chance to fall further behind. It is a chance to replace your worst score, and it is worth sitting properly for that reason alone.

The calculator applies that rule as you type. Enter IA-1 and IA-2 and you get a running average of the two. Enter IA-3 and the weakest of the three is struck out and the average recomputes from the two that remain.

An exam you have not written shows blank, not zero

This sounds like a small detail until it is wrong. If a subject showed a zero for IA-3 before you had written it, your internal marks would appear to collapse halfway through the semester for no reason — and a student half-way through their internals would be looking at a number that is not just pessimistic but meaningless.

Unentered exams stay blank. The average only ever considers exams you have actually entered, so what you see is always a real average of real scores.

The difference between a running average and your final mark

Until all three internals are in, the number on screen is a running average — useful, but not final. Once the third score is entered, it becomes your internal mark for that subject, because no later exam can change it.

That is also when the app shows you which attempt was dropped. Before all three are in it cannot say, since a score you have not written yet might displace a different one. Showing a dropped mark early would mean showing one that later changes.

Knowing where you stand before the semester ends

Internal marks are usually the part of your final grade you can still influence. Seeing the average per subject — and which subject is dragging — is the difference between finding out in the last week and finding out in time to do something about it.

Internals are entered and stored on your phone, like the rest of your study data.

Record each internal assessment as you get it back and see the running total for every subject, so you know where you stand long before the results are announced.

Internal Marks: common questions

How are VTU internal marks calculated?
VTU conducts three internal assessments per subject and takes the average of your best two. The weakest of the three is dropped, which is why the third IA is worth sitting properly — it can replace your worst score.
Is the third internal assessment counted at all?
It is, but only if it beats one of your first two. Once all three are entered the app strikes out the weakest and averages the remaining two, so the third IA is a chance to improve your internal mark rather than a risk of lowering it.
Why does an internal exam I have not written show blank instead of zero?
Because a zero would be wrong. An exam you have not written is not a score of nothing, and showing it as zero would make your internal marks appear to collapse part-way through the semester. The average only counts the exams you have actually entered.
When does my internal marks average become final?
Once all three internals are entered. Before that it is a running average of the exams you have written, which is useful for seeing where you stand but can still change. The app tells you which of the two you are looking at.
